Elizabeth was born in 1864 in Stalybridge.¹ Elizabeth's father was James Fogg and her mother was Maria Mather. Her paternal grandparents were John Fogg and Harriet Rosthorn; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Isherwood. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William, James, Samuel, Ellen, Christiana, Harriet and Susannah. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
