Robert's father was Robert Fisher and his mother was Elizabeth Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Richard Brereton and (Elizabeth) Ellen Lea. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Lorenzo, Robert, Joseph, John, William, Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
