Mary was born about 1866 in North Bierley. Mary's father was Edwin Farnell and her mother was Harriet Ambler. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Farnell and Mary Crosland. She had a brother and six sisters, named Alonzo, Mary, Ambler, Emma, Alice, Edith and Lucy. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
