James' father was Edward Entwistle and his mother was Ellen Marsden. His paternal grandparents were John Entwistle and Rachel Mather. Ralph Entwistle and Catherine Thompson were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had two brothers and a sister, named Charles, John and Ida. He was the second oldest of the four children.
