Thomas' father was John Edmondson and his mother was Rachel Mather. His maternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah Blackburn. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard, John, John, James, William, Sarah, Mary and Ann. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named John. He died due to a childhood disease at the age of 2 in March 1889 in Little Bolton.¹
