John's father was Thomas Eddowes and his mother was Ann Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Eddowes and Abigail Blythen. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, George, Edmund, Alfred, Arthur, Emma, Abigail, Elizabeth and Emy.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
