Joseph's father was George Eastwood and his mother was Elizabeth Woodhead.  His maternal grandparents were John Woodhead and Hannah Scover. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, George, Jonas, Rebecca, Priscilla, Mary, Hannah and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named James.
