John was born on August 18th, 1820 in Broughton (Hawarden) and his baptism took place on September 10th, 1820 in Hawarden.1  John's father was Samuel Davies and his mother was Jane Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Davies and Rachel Millington. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Edward, Thomas, Samuel, George, William, Rachel, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
