Mary's father was Abraham (Alexander) Crook and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Wilson. Her paternal grandparents were William Crook and Betty Nelson. She had a brother and three sisters, named William, Agnes, Harriet and Annie. She had an adopted brother named Thomas. She had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Ellen and Margaret.
