Johanna was born in 1800 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and her baptism took place on January 26th, 1800 at Bradshaw Chapel.1 2  Johanna's father was William Crook and her mother was Betty Nelson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Crook and Alice Aldred. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Andrew, Alexander, James, Alice, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary and Hannah.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
