Robert was born in December 1848 in Edgworth.1  Robert's father was William Crawshaw and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Isaac, James, William, John, Peter, James, Sarah, Nancy and Sarah.  He died at the age of 82 in 1930.
