Robert was born in December 1848 in Edgworth.1  Robert's father was William Crawshaw and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Sarah Jackson. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Isaac, James, William, John, Peter, James, Sarah, Nancy and Sarah.
