James was born in December 1847 in Edgworth.1  James' father was William Crawshaw and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Sarah Jackson. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Isaac, Robert, William, John, Peter, James, Sarah, Nancy and Sarah.  Isaac and James were twins.  He died in December 1847 in Bolton.2
