Hugh's father was Hugh Douglas Corteen and his mother was Annie Louisa Hale. His maternal grandparents were Thomas (Tom) Hale and Margaret Winslade. He had a brother and three sisters, named Douglas, Susan, Shirley and Helen. He has an adopted sister named Audrey.-
