Thomas' father was David Hale and his mother was Mary Millman. He had four brothers and two sisters, named David, John, George, Edward, Mary and Hephybah. He was the sixth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 62 in September 1914 in Birkenhead.²

  Thomas's father, David Hale, a joiner, moved to Tranmere, Birkenhead from Bromley, Kent, whilest his brother William moved to Australia in mid 1850s.
  
  The first 4 children's births were registered at Tranmere, and then from 1880, Birkenhead.
  
  His first wife Mary may have died, and Thomas remarried.
