Douglas' father was Hugh Douglas Corteen and his mother was Annie Louisa Hale. His maternal grandparents were Thomas (Tom) Hale and Margaret Winslade. He had a brother and three sisters, named Hugh, Susan, Shirley and Helen. He had an adopted sister named Audrey. He died at the age of 70 in 2007 in Powes.
