Helen's father was Hugh Douglas Corteen and her mother was Annie Louisa Hale. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas (Tom) Hale and Margaret Winslade. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Douglas, Hugh, Susan and Shirley. She has an adopted sister named Audrey.-
