William was born in June 1855 in Turton.1  William's father was James Cooper and his mother was Peggy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Walter, James, Mary, Amelia, Harriett and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
