Harriett was born in June 1862 in Turton.1  Harriett's father was James Cooper and her mother was Peggy Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Walter, James, Mary, Amelia and Elizabeth.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
