James was born in June 1868 in Turton.¹

James' father was James Cooper and his mother was Peggy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, George, Walter, Mary, Amelia, Harriett and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1869 in Turton.¹
