George's father was James Cooper and his mother was Peggy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Walter, James, Mary, Amelia, Harriett and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
