Mary was born in March 1853 in Turton.1  Mary's father was James Cooper and her mother was Peggy Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Walter, James, Amelia, Harriett and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
