Elizabeth was born in March 1865 in Turton.1  Elizabeth's father was James Cooper and her mother was Peggy Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Walter, James, Mary, Amelia and Harriett.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
