Herbert's father was William Buckley and his mother was Elizabeth Young.  His paternal grandparents were William Buckley and Esther Stretch; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Young and Mary Gerrard. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, William, George, Arthur, Albert, Elizabeth and Lucy.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.  He died at 3 months old in June 1900 in Northwich.¹
