William's father was William Buckley and his mother was Esther Stretch. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Charles, John, James, Hannah, Emma, Alice and Sarah. He was the seventh oldest of the eight known children.

  In 1881, (possibly another) William Buckley (14) and Elizabeth Young (13) and their families were neighbours at Little Budworth. Another William (14) was a servant for Ellen Moss at Little Budworth. However, both these Williams are born at Little Budworth.
  
  In 1889, William married Elizabeth Young at Great Budworth St Mary. They soon had a son Samuel who died an infant.
