Thomas' father was Thomas Brown and his mother was Mary Ann Postans. His paternal grandparents were William Brown and Mary; his maternal grandparents were William Clement and Ann (Anne) Postans. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Mathew, Arthur, Mary, Nell, Elizabeth and Jane. He had an adopted sister named Evelyn.
