Adam was born in 1870 in Blackburn.¹ Adam's father was Edward Brown and his mother was Margaret Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Abraham Brereton and Ann Orrett. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Abraham, Edward, Mary, Agnes, Sarah and Margaret. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
