William's father was William Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth Whittingham.  His paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Ellen Latham. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Henry, Richard, Mary, Martha, Jane, Harriet, Elizabeth, Ellen and Fanny.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 38 in March 1877 in Audlem.  He was buried on March 14th, 1877 in Audlem.²
