Ellen was born in 1846 in Aston (& Newhall).1  Ellen's father was William Brereton and her mother was Elizabeth Whittingham.  Her paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Ellen Latham. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Henry, Richard, Mary, Martha, Jane, Harriet, Elizabeth and Fanny.  She was the second youngest of the eleven children.  She died at the age of 32 in June 1878 in Nantwich.2
