Harriet was born in June 1835 in Wrenbury and her baptism took place there on June 23rd, 1835.1 2  Harriet's father was William Brereton and her mother was Elizabeth Whittingham.  Her paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Ellen Latham. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Henry, Richard, Mary, Martha, Jane, Elizabeth, Ellen and Fanny.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
