Thomas was born in March 1839 in Bridgemere and his baptism took place on March 24th, 1839 in Wybunbury.1 2  Thomas' father was Samuel Brereton and his mother was Hannah Salmon.  His paternal grandparents were Constantine Samuel Brereton and Margery (Padday) Birchall. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Frank, William, Fanny, Elizabeth and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the six children.
