Hannah was born in 1852 in Bridgemere. Hannah's father was Samuel Brereton and her mother was Hannah Salmon. Her paternal grandparents were Constantine Samuel Brereton and Margery (Padday) Birchall. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Frank, William, Fanny and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the six children.
