Richard's father was William (William II) Lord Brereton and his mother was Rt Hon Elizabeth Goring. His paternal grandparents were Sir John Brereton and Lady Anne Fyton. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named William, Henry, George, John, John, Mary, Anne, Elizabeth, Margaret, Elizabeth, Frances and Jane. He was the twelfth oldest of the thirteen children.
