Jane's father was Samuel Brereton Jnr and her mother was Mary Green.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Brereton Snr and Mary Whittingham. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, George, Thomas, James, Samuel, Hannah, Mary, Anne and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
