James' father was Joseph Brereton and his mother was Sarah Reay.  His paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Ellen Latham. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, George, Betty, Mary, Hannah, Ann, Sarah and Martha.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 9 in July 1839 in Walgherton.  He was buried on July 4th, 1839 in Wybunbury.¹
