Emma was born in March 1844 in Weston (near Crew).1  Emma's father was James Brereton and his mother was Ann Cope.  His paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Mary Jackson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Edward, Henry, Elizabeth and Mary Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
