Edward was born in March 1841 in Weston (near Crew).1  Edward's father was James Brereton and his mother was Ann Cope.  His paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Mary Jackson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Emma, Henry, Elizabeth and Mary Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
