John was born in January 1793 in Harwood and his baptism took place on January 13th, 1793 at Bradshaw Chapel.1  John's father was John Bolton and his mother was Sarah Roscow. He had a brother and six sisters, named <male>, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Alice, Dorothy and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
