William was born in August 1836 in Hatherton and his baptism took place on August 7th, 1836 in Wybunbury.1 2  William's father was Thomas Billington and his mother was Mary Brereton.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Mary Buckley. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel, James, Thomas, Jane, Ann, Mary, Martha, Hannah, Elizabeth and Hannah.  He was the third youngest of the eleven children.
