Elizabeth was born in August 1833 in Hatherton and her baptism took place on August 25th, 1833 in Wybunbury.1 2  Elizabeth's father was Thomas Billington and her mother was Mary Brereton.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Mary Buckley. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Samuel, James, William, Thomas, Jane, Ann, Mary, Martha, Hannah and Hannah.  She was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.

‌Elizabeth and James were married in a civil ceremony in October 1857 in Nantwich.3
