Harriet's father was Charles Henry Bent and her mother was Elizabeth Ellen Brockbank. Her maternal grandparents were John Brockbank and Mary Ann Mather. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Charles, James, Walter, Frederick, Elizabeth, Mary and Edith. She was the youngest of the nine children.
