Mary's father was Benjamin Bennett and her mother was Mary Hewitt. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Mary Hughes. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Samuel, Humphrey, Banner, Joseph, Mary, Priscilla, Maria and Martha. She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
