Jonathan's father was Edward Bennett and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Wood. His paternal grandparents were Cap John Bennett and Jane Roberts. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Edward, Benjamin, Mark, Elizabeth, Jane, Jane, Hattie, Gladys and Emma. He was the tenth oldest of the eleven children.
