Catherine's father was Edward Bennett and her mother was Mary Ann Coppack. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Catherine Jones. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, Edward, William, Jonathan, Joseph, Thomas, Albert, Stephen, Priscilla, Mary and Priscilla. She was the eighth oldest of the twelve children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named John, Maggie and Adelaide.
