Benjamin's father was Edward Bennett and his mother was Mary Ann Coppack. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Catherine Jones. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Edward, William, Jonathan, Joseph, Thomas, Albert, Stephen, Priscilla, Mary, Catherine and Priscilla. He was the third oldest of the twelve children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named John, Maggie and Adelaide.
