Charles was born in 1838 in Chorlton (Wybumbury) and his baptism took place on August 5th, 1837 in Malpas.1 2  Charles' father was George Battarbee and his mother was Margaret Palin.  His paternal grandparents were George Batarbee and Mary Richards. He had three brothers and six sisters, named George, Joseph, Richard, Mary, Ann, Margaret, Harriet, Fanny and Emma.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.
