Joseph's father was George Battarbee and his mother was Margaret Palin. His paternal grandparents were George Batarbee and Mary Richards. He had three brothers and six sisters, named George, Charles, Richard, Mary, Ann, Margaret, Harriet, Fanny and Emma. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
