Walter was born in December 1872 in Bolton.1  Walter's father was Thomas Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Ashcroft and Mary Longworth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Reuben, Henry, Thomas, Gertrude and Beatrice.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight known children.
