John was born in September 1868 in Wigan.1  John's father was Thomas Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Ashcroft and Mary Longworth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Reuben, Walter, Henry, Thomas, Gertrude and Beatrice.  He was the second oldest of the eight known children.
