Gertrude was born in June 1880 in Bolton.1  Gertrude's father was Thomas Ashcroft and her mother was Mary Davenport.  Her paternal grandparents were James Ashcroft and Mary Longworth. She had six brothers and a sister, named James, John, Reuben, Walter, Henry, Thomas and Beatrice.  She was the third youngest of the eight known children.
