James was born in December 1866 in Wigan.1  James' father was Thomas Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Ashcroft and Mary Longworth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Reuben, Walter, Henry, Thomas, Gertrude and Beatrice.  He was the oldest of the eight known children.
